Aokana Review First Thoughts

Aokana Review First Thoughts

AOKANA: Four Rhythm Across the Blue Episode 1 First thoughts.

The Story

AOKANA is a story about a young girl, Kurashina, who due to her fathers’ occupation was kept away from the Kuna Island for several years, forgetting social graces, and staying behind current trends in technology.

In Kuna Island (an island that is apart of the Four Island Apelago) students are giving Grav-shoes that allow them to fly. Kurashina becomes obsessed with learning how to fly but due to her awkward nature, it takes a lot more work than usual. Despite her flying problems, she still musters up the courage – well no, courage isn’t the word. She musters up the enthusiasm to take on this challenge and get into more antics.

My thoughts

I don’t know about you but writing that synopsis nearly put me to sleep. I don’t have much good to say here, I’m so sorry. I promise, I don’t get off on giving bad reviews. I really wanted to like this show.

So my issues are

  1. I don’t care about the characters.
  2. I don’t care about the storyline.
  3. And, I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to be a comedy, but I didn’t find it funny.

Now, I would just leave it at that but because I’m giving this a bad review, it’s only right that I explain why this show falls flat for me.

Lets start with the characters.

Kushina: A doe-eyed girl with ambitions bigger than her current skill level. The story surrounds her yet her motivation seems pretty weak to me: she wants to learn how to fly. Ok, that’s cool. I can see why someone would want that, but why is this so important to her? I couldn’t really say after watching this first episode. Her awkwardness is charming but meh. So what? I just don’t care.

Masaya: A level –headed guy who is always willing to help. He’s just booming with personality. Ok, that was a joke. He isn’t booming with anything… well, I’ll take that back. He’s booming with kindness, it seems. Nothing’s wrong with being kind, I guess. It’s just kinda boring that’s all I’m saying, Yo.

Misaki: A girl with a split personality that is dependent on her blood pressure levels This character has potential but given the nature of this review, you can assume that I don’t think the potential was realized.

Mishuri Slave girl who voluntarily bound herself to Misaki because Misaki is so cool. I don’t even really want to talk about this one. I just want to finish this review.

Satouin: A girl from elite school who enjoys stamping out people’s morale. Finally some conflict!

The Storyline

In a word, the storyline is boring. There is barely any conflict. I don’t see what this show is going to be about.

There is one good thing…

The world the story is built in is pretty interesting. Grav-shoes, that’s cool. Udon restaurant sounds tasty. I like it. Flying competitions, maybe there’s potential here.

But nothing of what I said is worth watching more episodes.

I give this show 1 out of 5.
